Review of Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

I bought this book when Waterstones released the special edition earlier in the year.

Elizabeth Zott is a chemist working in a predominantly male world in the early 1960s. No one seems to take Elizabeth seriously, especially her male colleagues with the exception of famous scientist Calvin Evans who is working in the same laboratory.

Calvin and Elizabeth strike up a relationship and soon become inseparable. However,  things aren’t meant to be and Elizabeth suddenly finds herself alone as a single mother.

Out of the blue, Elizabeth finds herself the host of a popular cooking show called Supper at Six and her life seems to turn around. Her cooking is revolutionary, but not only does it change the way women start to cook it also makes them look at things differently and some people are not at all happy about this.

This book highlights the huge injustices dealt to women in the workplace. My favourite character had to be the wonderful dog Six Thirty who plays such a big part in this book.

This is easily one of my favourite books of the year so far, I couldn’t put it down. What an amazing debut novel.
