Review of Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

This book is a retelling of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, it takes the dual perspective of Ariadne, who helped Theseus to conquer the Minotaur and escape from the Labyrinth and her younger sister Phaedra.

Ariadne and Phaedra are Princesses of Crete where they live with their controlling father King Minos and their brother, the Minotaur. When Ariadne sees Theseus, a prisoner who has been brought to Crete from Athens as a sacrifice, for the first time she falls instantly in love and knows that she must help him. However, once the minotaur has been slain Ariadne’s life can never be the same and she will always be seen as a traitor towards Crete. She believes that the ambitious Theseus will protect her and that they will begin a new life together, but things don’t go quite to plan.

The settings of the Greek Islands are so vividly portrayed that the reader can almost smell the sea air. I was so captivated by this story that I read it in just two sittings.

I really liked the way that this book doesn’t just cover Ariadne’s role in the slaying of the Minotaur, but follows her whole life. I was completely enthralled reading about the lives of both her and her sister Phaedra. I also absolutely loved this beautiful cover.

Saint's retelling of the stories of Ariadne and Phaedra brings a new perspective to the Greek myths. I can’t wait to read more from this author and have already pre-ordered my copy of Elektra.
