In 1949, Miranda and her husband Gerry are sent to Singapore
for his job. Miranda hopes that they can make a fresh start and leave behind terrible
heartbreak in England.
Their new life gets off to a very luxurious start and
despite being fascinated by her new surroundings, Miranda feels like an
outsider in the expat society and feels like she is becoming more and more
distant from Gerry.
When she meets Dr Nick Wythenshaw and begins volunteering at
his hospital, she feels like her life has purpose again. However, will it be
enough to heal the loss she has suffered? When riots begin, it becomes
dangerous to even go to the hospital and Miranda will be forced to make an
impossible choice to ensure her happiness.
This is a very moving novel filled with heartbreak, loss,
hope and love, I became completely engrossed in Miranda’s life and could not put
this down. I also found the historical context of Singapore post World War two
to be a fascinating setting.
I loved this book so much, the writing is evocative and compelling
and you are quickly transported to Singapore in the late 1940s/early 1950s.
I highly recommend this book, especially for fans of
historical fiction.
