Review of Codename Edelweiss by Justin Kerr-Smiley

I am delighted to be taking part in the Random Things blog tour for Codename Edelweiss. I received a copy of this book as part of the blog tour.

The book begins in Argentina in 1976 when a military government rules the country. It is the thirtieth anniversary of a mysterious jungle fire, which killed a whole village where the sole survivor was a three year old boy who is now a Jesuit priest. Jewish journalist Ariel Guzman, is sure that the priest remembers more about the fire than he has let on and travels to the site to find out the truth.

However, the story that he is told is completely shocking and not what he expected at all. The man informs him that Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun did not commit suicide in the bunker, but instead escaped to Argentina and lived in a camp nearby. Furthermore, it was in fact Hitler who gave orders to burn down the village and kill the inhabitants, but he does not say why. The man only says that if he dies there is one person who must be protected and his codename is Edelweiss.

However, there are other people on the hunt for Edelweiss too and some have more sinister reasons to find him. The problem is that time is running out and Ariel wants to find out the truth…

I have been fascinated by the Second World War since I was young and studied it both at school and University, so I was really interested in this book. It definitely did not disappoint.

This is a fantastic read that is fast paced and takes you on a journey between Germany at the end of World War Two and 1970s Argentina.

I highly recommend this, especially if you are a fan of historical fiction.
