Review of Cabin Fever by Michael Smith and Jonathan Franklin

Today I am reviewing Cabin Fever as part of the Random Things blog tour. I received a copy of this book as part of the tour.

Cabin Fever is the true story of what happened to the Cruise Ship Zaandam as the pandemic struck in March 2020.

On the 8th March 2020, the Zaandam left Argentina for what should have been a voyage around South America and it was a trip of a lifetime for many onboard the cruise. However, as the first evening cocktail party got into full swing and the guests settled themselves into their cabins, no one realised that there was an invisible stowaway destined to cause havoc: Covid 19 was aboard and waiting.

I was intrigued by this book, as I remember watching the news about the people stranded on cruise ships when we were in lockdown and thinking what a terrifying situation that must be. I love cruises, but the idea of lockdown in a tiny room with a window or balcony if you were lucky was just awful.

I picked this up to read a chapter one afternoon and literally couldn’t stop, it begins with a holiday feel as you learn about the different passengers and crew who were on board and it should have been a holiday of a lifetime. Instead, as we know with hindsight, it turned into a nightmare and a deadly one for many.

This was an unputdownable read, it highlighted the terrible tragedy that rapidly unfolded as the ship, and many others, found themselves stranded on the ocean with literally no where to go.
