I am thrilled to be taking part in the random things blog tour for The Witch and the Tsar today. I received a copy of this book as part of the tour.

In sixteenth century Russia the legendary witch of fairy tales is Baba Yaga - rumours say that she has an iron nose, fangs and lives alone deep in the woods. This book retells this fairytale and gives Baba Yaga’s story from her side.

Full of magic, betrayal and power, The Witch and the Tsar sweeps you back to the 1500s to the time of Tsar Ivan and Tsarita Anastasia.

It’s a time when just being a woman is dangerous, but one who has powers is under immediate threat.

When Tsarita Anastasia travels to visit Baba Yaga and asks for her help, Yaga feels she must leave the safety of the woods and travel with the Tsarita to keep her safe. When she arrives at the Palace nothing is as it seems and no one is safe. It soon becomes clear that someone is poisoning the Tsarita, but who and why is a mystery.

As Yaga attempts to find out, she begins to realise that otherworldly powers are at work here too.

This book is Olesya Salnikova Gilmore’s debut novel and it is beautifully written. I am looking forward to reading her next book.

I would high recommend this to anyone who enjoys retellings and I absolutely love this beautiful cover!
