The Witches of Vardo is set on the island of Vardo in Norway in 1662. It retells the infamous witch trials that took place on the island.

The book is told from the perspectives of three women - Anna, Ingeborg and Maren.

Anna is a prisoner of the King of Denmark and longs to return to court life in Copenhagen.

Ingeborg is a fisherman’s daughter who is forced to make her way to Vardo with her younger sister Kirsten when their mother is accused of witchcraft. Maren is the daughter of a witch and a pirate - nobody wants her around and only the Sami community accept her.

When Ingeborg’s mother arrives at Vardo accused of being a witch, Anna realises that the only way to get her old life back may be to help with the witch hunt. However, when Ingeborg and Maren arrive at Vardo, Anna realised that she has a terrible task ahead of her.

As the trial comes closer, can the women show their true power or will prejudice and superstition leans to terrible consequences?

This is a haunting and beautifully written book that brings a terrifying episode on history to life.

It shows the injustices put upon women in a time of male power and how one small incident could lead to an accusation of witchcraft.
