Today is my stop on the blog tour for Counting Lost Stars by Kim Van Alkemade.

The book opens in New York in 1960 where Rita Klein is at the Hudson Home for Unwed Mothers. Forced to leave her college course and to put her baby up for adoption, her father helps her to find a job in computer programming.

There she meets Jacob Nassy, a Dutch man who is deeply troubled by his childhood during the Second World War where he was separated from his mother. When Rita discovers that the Naxos used the Hollerith punch card computers, she is determined to help him find out what happened.

Rita’s research uncovers a link Cornelia Vogel and Jacob’s mother, but it aIso threatens to open long buried secrets.

This is a beautifully written book with two strong, intelligent women at its heart.

I would recommend this for fans of historical fiction.

I particularly liked the way in which the book alternates between 1960 and the 1940s. It gives a glimpse into two very different worlds.
