Review of The Turnglass by Gareth Rubin

Today is my stop on the Random Things blog tour for The Turnglass by Gareth Rubin.

The book begins on one side in 1880 on the bleak and remote Island of Ray in Essex. If you turn the book over, it is a different story that starts in California in 1939.

This is so unusual, but instantly I wondered how the two are kinkier and on what journey would they take the reader.

I started with the 1880 story that sees Dr Simeon Lee travel to Ray to see his uncle who he fears has been poisoned. When he gets there he is shocked to discover a woman called Florence imprisoned in a strange glass part of the house. When he tries to find out more, she suggests he read his uncles journal, which has two very different sides to it.

Meanwhile, in the 1930s side of the book Oliver Tooke has died in a mysterious suicide, which his friend Ken is sure was not intentional.

The link is with imprisoned Florence. Does she hold the key to these mysteries and what is the truth?

This is a dark and atmospheric book unlike anything I have read before.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to read more by this author.
