Today is our stop on the Random Things blog tour for Five Bad Deeds by Caz Frear.
Ellen and Adam Walsh have recently moved to The Meadowhouse in Thames Lawley, an upmarket village outside London. Adam`s wealthy parents loaned the couple the money to purchase the home which needed considerable renovation. Ellen is mother to awkward teenage daughter Orla and two-year-old twins Max and Kian as well as doing part-time tutoring to enable students to improve their English grades. She also has the ambition to work at their prestigious school as Head of English, Secretly, she coaches a bright but erratic student, Zane, on a local run-down estate.
She befriends Nush and Tom, a local couple with a daughter at university, and Gwen, who lives opposite the Meadowhouse on the village green and who has a daughter Bella, the same age as the twins, Ellen has great plans for her new home, She wants to modernise it completely, but not everyone agrees with her vision, least of all Adam and Orla.
Ellen is well-meaning and good-hearted, but very garrulous and opinionated. She has built a very comfortable life in Thames Lawley with Adam and her family. She sees herself as doing good deeds and giving good advice while juggling her other commitments, along with Orla`s moods and Max`s tantrums.
It is this trait which leads to her new life gradually crumbling. She fails to realise that well-meant advice and actions do not always have the desired effect on others; innocent words and heartfelt acts can have dire repercussions.
Refreshing, gripping and disturbing in its innocence, this is an amazing book. A very different and arresting story and a marvellous read!
5 Stars.
