Vanda is set in Marseille where Vanda and her six year old
son Noe live in a shed on the beach. Theirs is a world of love and desperate
poverty, but it is their world and they are doing everything together.
However, Vanda’s ex and the father of Noe, turns up out of
the blue and puts the delicate balance of their lives in jeopardy. This arrival
causes all of Vanda’s carefully supressed anger to bubble to the surface as she
makes her true feelings known.
This is a dark and powerful book that you will still be
thinking about long after reading it.
It is beautifully written and I did not want to put it down.
The prose is almost poetic and hooks you in right from the very first page. It also
shows us how precarious life can be.
I enjoyed reading this and will be on the lookout for more
books by this author.
