Review of Burning Secret by RJ Lloyd

I am delighted to be taking part in the Random Things blog tour for Burning Secret by RJ Lloyd today. I received a copy of this book as part of the blog tour.

Burning Secret begins in London 1844 where Enoch Price has fallen on hard times. After becoming a bare knuckle fighter and narrowly avoiding prison due to debt, Enoch decides to reinvent himself and move to America with his wife Eliza and three daughters to follow at a later date.

Enoch becomes Harry Mount and after a short stay in New York City he travels to Florida where he finds work in a bar and meets Bessie Handley, a widow originally from Ireland.

As Harry he implores his wife and daughters to join him in Florida, but as time goes by it seems less and less likely. Instead, he begins to make a life and a name for himself in Jacksonville, Florida, but will his secrets catch up with him?

This is a sweeping tale that includes many of the historical events of the time. It is an action packed book that I did not want to put down.

I love researching family history, so I was fascinated that this is a retelling of a true story, which has been written by Harry Mason’s great great grandson.

I highly recommend this particularly for fans of historical fiction.
