Review of Blue Water by Leonora Nattrass

I am so excited to be taking part in the Viper Books blog tour for Blue Water by Leonora Nattrass. I received a copy of this book as part of the tour.

It’s 1795 and Laurence Jago is travelling aboard the Tankerville mail ship to Philadelphia. The ship has done unusual cargo and is carrying a treaty to the United States that will prevent a war with France against Britain. Jago claims to be accompanying journalist William Philpott, but his real mission lies with Mr Jenkinson from the War Office who has the Treaty.

However, not long into the journey the civil servant meets a supposedly accidental end and the treaty seems to disappear with him. As everyone begins to look for it, they soon realise that there are others, including a French ship, determined to get their hands on the treaty too.

On a small ship tackling perilous waves there is a murderer on the loose, but who could it be when everyone on board seems to be harbouring secrets of their own.

I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. It is a murder mystery at sea with a fantastic array of characters including an Irish actress, two French aristocrats fleeing the revolution and an adorable bear cub called Bruin.

I was fascinated to read that this was based on a true story of the Jay Treaty and its journey to the US in the 1700s.
