Today is my stop on the Random Things blog tour for The Figurine by Victoria Hislop.
I am a big fan of Victoria Hislop’s books and couldn’t wait to read this.
Helena is 8 when she first goes to visit her Grandparents in Athens in the late 1960s. A time when Greece is still under military rule. Helena’s mother left Greece after disagreeing with her parents political ambitions and has never returned, but wanted her daughter to learn about her Greek heritage.
Years later when Helena inherits her grandparents apartment in Athens, she uncovers a treasure trove of antiquities. How did her distant and stern Grandfather amass this and at what cost?
Helena is determined to find out where these truly belong and a passion for archaeology is soon ignited. Soon she knows that she must make amends for her Grandfathers actions, but in trying to find a true home for these precious objects she also finds herself questioning her own meaning of home.
This was such a fascinating story that I couldn’t put down. I felt transported to Greece and as if I was living vicariously through Helena.
I would recommend for any fans of historical fiction.
