Review of My Life in France by Julia Child

AD-PR Product.

Today in am taking part in the Random Things blog tour for My Life in France by Julia Child. I received a copy of this book as part of the tour.

I have an obsession with France and French food and we travel there on holiday every year. As soon as I saw the memoir of Julia Child, I knew I had to read it. This book was first published in 2004 and has now been reissued with a new cover and an introduction by Olivia Potts.

My Life in France tells Julia Child’s life moving to France with her husband Paul in 1948 and how she ended up becoming a famous cookery writer.

The book takes you on a gastronomic adventure from post war Paris to the home of bouillabaisse Marseille and onto Germany and Norway. It also goes behind the scenes in putting together the cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cookery and their long journey to publication.

I found this a very interesting read. I particularly liked the descriptions of post war Paris and Julia Child’s experience of living in Marseille in the early 1950s.

The descriptions of all of the meals they are in restaurants and cooked for guests are mouthwatering and I loved the mention of finishing off a long lunch with a 1929 Chateau d’yquem! My budget certainly doesn’t stretch to a Chateau d’yquem but I visit Sauternes every year and have included a bottle I bought last year in the picture.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of memoirs or cookery writing. It was a fascinating read and one of the best memoirs I have read.
