Review of The Blackbird by Tim Weaver

David Raker, private investigator specialising (successfully) in finding missing persons, is tasked with the impossible by a grieving family. He has to find Cate and Aiden Gascoigne, dead or alive.

The last time the couple were seen was over a year ago at the top of Gatton Hill, laughing in the sunlight, a vibrant and happy couple. Shortly thereafter, their car is in flames at the bottom of the hill in a deep ravine, with the duo trapped inside. Rescuers quickly arrive but the car is empty – Cate and Aisen have vanished..

David Raker`s painstaking investigation takes him from London to Northumberland and back following clues as to what photographer Cate was pursuing prior to the tragedy. Secrets, lies and dead bodies emerge as he links the tragedy with a thirty-year-old unsolved murder on the Northumberland coast. This is a journey like no other, leading him deeper and deeper into the quagmire of  deep-seated greed and evil.

The book has an ominously dark quality with myriad twists and turns. David Raker is a determined investigator, not put off by dead ends or seemingly hopeless conclusions. A read which I could not set down until I discovered the secret of the eponymous title!

A fast-moving and enthralling story from one of the most revered crime writers of the present day.

5 stars and more!!
