Review of The Perfumist of Paris by Alka Joshi

Today I am taking part in the Random Things blog tour for The Perfumist of Paris by Alka Joshi.

It’s 1974 and Radha is living in Paris with her husband Pierre and their two daughters. Radha loves her two young daughters dearly, but feels like she has found her passion in creating scent and is working hard to establish her career in their perfume industry.

Radha has received her very own commission and feels like her career is moving forwards. She is thrilled when her request to travel to India to gather ingredients for perfume is agreed.

With the help of her sister, she visits the courtesans of Agra to understand more about the alluring scent they create. Radha is sure that her commission will be a huge success.

However, Radha has been keeping a secret, she gave away a son when she was very young and now she finds out that he is on his way to Paris to find her. Radha’s carefully built world and all she has created are at risk of falling apart if her secret is revealed.

This is a beautifully written book that is so evocative to read. You can almost smell the scents described on the page and the locations are so vividly portrayed that you feel like you are there with the author.

I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the other books by this author. I love books set in Paris and this did not disappoint. I also think that this cover is so pretty.
