Today is my stop on the Random Things blog tour for The Orphans from Liverpool Lane by Eliza Morton.
It’s 1944 and twelve year old Marcia and her older sister Cynthia are sent to an orphanage. They are told it is just for a holiday as their mother is struggling to cope whilst their father is away at war, believed to be in a POW camp in Singapore.
They are quickly called Orphans of the Living - I had never heard this term before and thought it was such a sad one.
When their father returns, they hope that life will go back to the way it was before the war. However, it soon becomes clear that war has changed everything and before long the family falls apart.
Cynthia moves in with her aunt to try and become a dancer, whilst Marcia is sent back to the orphanage. Whilst she has friends there, she just longs for a family life again. Will it be possible or has life truly changed forever?
This is a fast paced and moving read set in 1940s Liverpool and you really feel that you’re transports you to the era. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
