Review of Once a Monster by Robert Dinsdale

 Ad-pr

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Once a Monster by Robert Dinsdale.

It’s London in 1861 and young Nell is a mudlarker, spending her days looking for treasures in the unforgiving and filthy River Thames. Bell’s mother died four years earlier and her only possession is a pair of satin slippers that give a glimpse into her dreams of being a dancer.

When Nell discovers a strange corpse on the shore of the river, she is not shocked but she knows instantly that there is something different about this huge body. Her fellow mudlarkers see expensive boots and full pockets and think that this will stop them being hungry for a while.

However, Nell made the find and she calls the shots and there is something about this sad figure she wants to try and save.

I enjoyed this deep and dark story that combines Victorian London with the legend of the Minotaur. It is a big book, but I sailed through desperate to know what would happen.

Thank you to Chloe and PanMacmillan for sending me a copy to review.
