Today is my stop on the blog tour for Wartime in the Dales by Diane Allen.

In September 1939, just before the outbreak of war Maggie Shaunessy and her best friend Lizzie Taylor are evacuated from their homes near the Liverpool docks and sent to live in the Yorkshire Dales.

Lizzie is sent to live with a vicar and his wife, whilst Maggie is chauffeur driven alongside fellow evacuee Archie to live at Hawith Hall with Lord and Lady Bradley.

Maggie and Archie can’t quite believe their surroundings and the huge amounts of food on offer. Whilst feeling homesick, Maggie decides to make the best of her situation and liked Alice a servant at the hall who looks after her, but Lizzie is not so positive and just wants to go home.

However, change soon comes to the Dales too and both girls hatch a plan to try to get back to Liverpool.

I enjoyed this book so much. The author really brings this era to life and you feel like you’re there with the characters.

I would recommend for fans of historical fiction.

Thank you to Panmacmillan for sending me a copy to review.
