Today is my stop on the Random Things blog tour for Lessons by Ian McEwan.
I am a big fan of Ian McEwan’s writing and couldn’t wait to read his latest book.
It’s 1959 and Roland has just arrived ‘home’ in England, a country he has never visited and is promptly shipped off to boarding school in Suffolk. Lonely and missing his mother, he attracts the attention of the piano teacher.
Years later, Roland is married with a young son when his wife disappears. Under suspicion from the police that he is responsible, Roland looks back over his life.
This is a deep and mesmerising read that also takes into account the context of the time and covers the historical events of the eras. From his early expat life in Libya through his life, you experience everything that Roland goes through. There are some serious issues addressed here too.
I look forward to reading more books by this author.
It is a book that is about love and looking back on past regrets. I found I didn’t want to put this down and felt intertwined with Roland’s life.
