Review of Maude Horton's Glorious Revenge by Lizzie Pook

Back in November, I was invited to a fantastic historical murder mystery supper by bookbreakuk. One of the books featured was Maude Horton’s Glorious Revenge by Lizzie Pook and I have been so excited about reading this.

It’s London in 1850 and Maude Horton is out to get revenge. Maude’s younger sister Constance has disappeared. All Maude knows is that Constance, who was always dreaming of adventure, disguised herself as a boy and boarded the Makepeace - a ship bound for the Arctic.

When Constance did not return with the ship, Maude was informed that she perished in a tragic accident. Maude knows there is more to it and is determined to find out the fate of her sister. She is given Constance’s arctic journal and soon her fear becomes reality - there was foulplay and someone is covering it up.

Maude’s trail leads her into a dangerous side of London and further afield to hangings at Newgate, York and to the lifelike waxworks at Madame Tussaud’s.

This is a book full of adventure, history and strong characters with a lot of grisly details. I was rooting for Maude the whole way through. I couldn’t put it down and cannot wait to read more books by this author! I know that the Victorians had a fascination with all things morbid, but I was quite shocked about the trips that were organised.
